The Montgomery ISD Board of Trustees has been named the Region 6 School Board of the Year for 2022–2023. The recognition is part of the annual Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) School Board Awards Program. Montgomery ISD’s Board of Trustees was recognized for its leadership and dedication to the students, families, and staff members of the growing school district.
The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) has sponsored the School Board of the Year recognition program since 1971. The purpose of this program is to recognize school boards whose service and dedication have made a positive impact on Texas schools. As part of the process to select the Outstanding School Board of the Year for Texas, one district school board of trustees from each of the state’s 20 Education Service Center regions is selected to advance. The Texas Outstanding School Board will be announced during txEDCON, the TASA/Texas Association of School Boards Convention, held September 29 –October 1 in Dallas.
“We are humbled and extremely excited to have been selected as the school board of the year for Region 6,” MISD Board President Laurie Turner said. “It is a privilege to work alongside service-minded individuals who always have the best interest of our students and staff in mind. Montgomery is truly an amazing place to live and raise a family, and it is a privilege to serve this community.”
Montgomery ISD received an A rating from the Texas Education Agency for the 2021-22 school year, with seven campuses securing an A rating and three campuses earning a B rating. The district also earned 23 distinction designations for outstanding performances on STAAR and other accountability system measures. The district’s seven-member school board supports programs that contribute to high performance including offerings in Career & Technical Education (CTE) and advanced academics. Montgomery ISD students also excel in robust extracurricular programs – achieving state and national recognition in athletics and fine arts.
“This is a well-deserved recognition for our board, and it is an honor to work alongside each of these servant-hearted leaders,” Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison said. “This Board has provided strong and steady leadership through extremely challenging issues impacting schools across the state and nation. Each member of the MISD Board of Trustees is deeply invested in the success of our school district and we never take for granted their commitment to our MISD students, families, and employees. We are thrilled for them to receive this amazing honor.”
Trustees unanimously supported a $326 million bond proposal, which was approved by voters in 2022. The projects included in the bond will support all students in MISD, addressing significant growth in student enrollment, facility upgrades at campuses districtwide and construction of Career & Technical Education and Ag Science facilities. The bond, with three separate propositions, was one of only seven in the state that was passed in its entirety.
Recognizing the importance of a strong workplace culture, trustees endorse the district’s culture of respect initiative, to ensure that Montgomery ISD is a place where employees not only want to work, but also feel that their contributions matter and all voices are heard. Whether working on a campus, or in a district building or facility, employees should always feel that the work they do, and the way they are made to feel while doing it, is valued. This commitment to educators was further demonstrated by the trustees’ approval of funding for a comprehensive cohort for Texas Reading Academies, equipping teachers with a foundational knowledge of how students learn to read and what science recommends when students struggle. Trustees also support a Mentoring Program for new-to-the-profession educators and comprehensive, job-embedded professional development opportunities for all employees.

We are excited to move them forward as the representative for Region 6 and wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the process.”

The Region 6 Education Service Center is located in Huntsville, Texas in the piney woods, 60 miles north of Houston. Region 6 encompasses 12,400 square miles that includes 15 counties and over 60 school districts, private schools, and charter schools.
