During the Spring semester, school nurses present information to students in 5th grade about the early stages of puberty. Parent permission is required for students to participate in the lessons. The program used is Always Changing-About You Program by Proctor and Gamble. The program is based on national research and consultation with school nurses, health educators, parents, and medical professionals. It has been a trusted resource for 20 years and has been taught to millions of students, nationwide. This program is intended to address puberty and personal hygiene. There is a short film for girls and a separate short film for boys. This is not a program for sex education. The goals of the videos are to:
- Understand that personal hygiene is each individualā€™s responsibility.
- Understand the physical and emotional changes they experience during puberty and acknowledge these changes as a normal part of growth and development.
- Learn the physiology of their bodies and correct terminology for parts of the reproductive system.
In addition to the above-mentioned topics, the girls will:
- Understand the menstrual cycle.
- Learn how to manage periods while continuing normal activities.
If you have any questions about The Always Changing-About You Program, please contact the school nurse.

This website will not be used in the presentation, but could be a resource used by the parent to continue the conversation.
