School Closure/Start Delay and Inclement Weather Procedures

On occasion, severe weather including flooding, tornadoes, ice and snow can affect Montgomery and our surrounding area. Closing our schools and district operations due to weather-related issues is a decision we take very seriously. Our top priority is the safety of Montgomery ISD students and staff. Below is information on the considerations MISD takes to make school closure decisions.

How does Montgomery ISD make a determination to close or delay the start of schools?

If severe weather is imminent or forecasted, district administration closely monitors weather reports. Administrators will also drive roads across MISD to determine if major roads and bus routes are safe. The superintendent consults with Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, as well as neighboring districts on their decision whether or not to close their schools. Items taken into consideration to close or delay the start of schools include flooding or ice on major roads, and forecasts for worsening weather as the day progresses that may impact school dismissal.

How will MISD notify about closures or delays?

If a decision is made to close or delay the start of schools, it will be made as quickly as possible after receiving information necessary to determine if proceeding with the school day is safe. Whenever possible, depending on forecasted weather and based on information provided by County officials, the district will make the decision to close or delay the start of schools with adequate time for families to make necessary arrangements. Montgomery ISD will issue communications to parents and staff through our SchoolMessenger notification system via email, text message, recorded phone messages and through district social media accounts. It is important that all parents/guardians maintain current student information such as phone numbers and emails in their files as this is the primary means of communicating any closure information. The fastest way to receive notifications from the district is to check your email, text messages, and MISD's Facebook and Twitter pages. Closure or delay announcements will also be sent to local media including Houston area television stations KHOU (Ch. 11), KTRK (Ch. 13), KPRC (Ch. 2) and KRIV (Ch. 26).

Other Important Information

School closure or start delay decisions are not taken lightly by district officials. Montgomery ISD makes every decision by keeping student safety at top of mind. The district will always aim to make a final decision on school closure or start delay with adequate time for families to plan ahead. If you are not receiving phone calls, texts and/or emails from MISD, please contact your campus registrar to make sure your contact information is current and correct.
