Art

Art is a year-long elective course that meets every day for 45 minutes. Classes delve into drawing, painting, 3-D sculpture, weaving, and photography through presentation of artwork.

• Students work on drawing projects which include still life, landscape, portraiture, and perspective. Paintings are completed using watercolor and temperas.
• During the sculpture unit, classes work primarily with papier-mâché and clay.
• Art history and art "masters" are introduced to students and the elements of design are continually reinforced.
• Sixth grade art classes participate in several special school projects throughout the year. Students have the opportunity to have artwork displayed in several exhibits through the school and outside businesses.

• No more singing and no more recorder, the Montgomery Middle School Band is where the magic happens for over 100 sixth grade students. This is the class where the students can make as much noise as they want and not get into trouble! They get to learn how to read music, make a sound on their instrument, and then put it together to make music.
• The students have to work hard, practice every night, and do their other homework, but one of the rewards of hard work in band is having lots of fun at the concerts.

Choir

Students who participate in the choir program at MMS embark on an educational and musical journey that will last a lifetime. Montgomery choirs are known throughout the state and the nation for their tradition of excellence. Choir is a year-long elective course that meets every day. 6th grade choir is all about the transition from 5th grade general music class to 7th grade UIL choir. Students begin to dive into the world of sight-reading and learn what it takes to be a part of a competition level ensemble. There are many opportunities for students to learn and grow not only as a team, but individually as well. Various social events are held throughout the course of the year for students to be able to meet new people and build camaraderie among the choirs. Choir requires hard work and dedication, but students soon discover the benefits and rewards for excellence.

Theatre Arts

Whether your life’s dream is to be the next Broadway Star or if you just want to make a few new friends this year, Theatre Arts is the place for you!

Theatre Arts is a one semester elective course that meets for 3 of the 6 grading periods. Theatre Arts at the 6th grade level is all about discovery. Some students may not realize that they have a talent for standing in front of others and portraying a character because they have simply never been given the opportunity to do so. Other students may feel shy and are scared to stand in front of their friends simply because they do not feel confident in themselves. 6th grade theater is designed to give students those opportunities and to help students overcome those fears. By the end of their time in theater, students will begin to realize that "Yes, I can." Even if they never set foot on a stage after this year, each student will walk away from this class with tools they can use for the rest of their lives.
