2016 marks the 20th consecutive year our Schools have invited veterans, their families, and friends to attend FREE Patriotic Events honoring Veterans. To commemorate our twentieth anniversary, we are hosting a special program on Monday, November 1st at 10 a.m. at the MISD Athletic Complex. Over 2,000 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students representing 6 campuses will participate in a patriotic program including flyovers, a special guest speaker, and patriotic music performed by our students.
Like many great traditions, this one started small. On Veterans Day in 1996, Montgomery Intermediate School and Montgomery Junior High School invited some veterans to come and have coffee and see a short patriotic program. Over the years, these programs have grown to encompass all grade levels and now all schools. Last year, it is estimated that almost 2,000 people attended MISD Veteran’s Program Events.
We do academics well in MISD! However, it is our focus on teaching the whole child that sets us apart. Programs like these remind us that some of the most important things our students learn are not found in a textbook. Intangible traits like honor, courage, sacrifice, good character, & respect are vitally important to a life well lived. Thank you MISD for preparing our students for life after high school, and thank you to our veterans for allowing us to live free and have the opportunity to teach the future!
