MISD Voluntary COVID-19 Rapid Testing

Goal of Testing

The health, safety and well-being of staff, students and families is the top priority in Montgomery ISD. As such, in addition to steps to screen for COVID-19 and prevent its spread on a campus, we are adding a voluntary K-12 COVID-19 testing program for staff and students. At no time will COVID-19 testing be mandatory as this is provided as a service and courtesy to MISD employees and students.  This program uses Abbott Laboratories BinaxNOW tests provided by the federal government. For individuals who have been exposed to a positive case, testing provides the individual the opportunity to return to in-person instruction in a shorter amount of time than without testing.  The tests are available at no cost to MISD employees and students.

What tests are used for this program?

This program uses BinaxNOW tests, which provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab in the front area of the nostril. These tests have been shown to be highly accurate, with accuracy rates of 97-98% for symptomatic individuals.

STAFF

In order to be eligible for a COVID-19 Rapid Test through this program, the staff member:

  • Must be experiencing multiple symptoms characteristic of COVID-19 or
  • Must have been in close contact with a positive case.  The test should be given on or after day 5 from the last date of exposure.

If a staff member is feeling sick, they should not enter the school and risk exposing other individuals.  They may call the contact person listed below to schedule an appointment with a test administrator.  The staff member can drive up to the school to the designated location and the test administrator will bring the test to the car for the individual to administer.  As an alternative, staff may also make an appointment for testing at the MISD Education Support Center.

Tests are available by appointment only.  Please contact the following to schedule an appointment (MISD employees only):

When applicable, staff should communicate the results of the test with Teresa Tipton, Benefits and Leave Specialist, to determine the appropriate return to school date.

STUDENTS

COVID-19 rapid testing will never be mandatory for students.  However, this option is available for parents to choose under certain circumstances.  In order to be eligible for a COVID-19 Rapid Test through this program, the student’s parent must communicate with the school nurse, and the student:

  • Must be experiencing multiple symptoms characteristic of COVID-19 or
  • Must have been in close contact with a positive case.  The test should be given on or after day 5 from the last date of exposure.

If a student is feeling sick with COVID symptoms, they should not enter the school or they should be isolated from other students to prevent exposing other individuals.  The parent should communicate with the school nurse and determine if rapid testing is appropriate.  If deemed appropriate, the parent may schedule an appointment with a test administrator.  All student tests will be administered at the MISD Education Support Center.  The student and guardian will enter the building via a separate entrance to the left of the main front doors.  A parent/guardian must be present for students under 18 and a consent form will be required to be signed.  Forms will be available at the ESC, or you can access the form at the link below.

Testing site:  MISD Education Support Center, 20774 Eva Street, Montgomery, TX 77356

Hours of operation:  By appointment only

To schedule an appointment:  Complete the scheduling form at the link found at the bottom of this page.  Please call (936) 276-2000 if you need assistance.

The consent form can be printed and filled out prior to your appointment.  Forms will be available at your appointment, but if you bring a completed form with you, it will speed up your appointment.

The parent/guardian will need to communicate with the school to determine the appropriate return to school date based on the results of the test.

How will the information from the tests be used?

Rapid testing results are complete after a 15 minute waiting period.  Test results will be sent via text message and email within 24 hours. The results will also be shared with the school/district and with the local health department to allow for public health reporting and contact tracing and to determine the stay-at-home period for individuals who test positive. Please note that this process follows the same protocols and procedures when a test is conducted by an outside agency.  Additionally, the total number of positive tests per school will also be shared with the Texas Department of State Health Services as is required by law.

You must make an appointment at the link above.  No walk-in appointments will be accepted.  Only one guest allowed per appointment and all individuals must be wearing a mask.

To speed up your appointment, you can bring a completed consent form with you (for students). You may also pre-register at this link:  https://register.txrapidtest.org/.  Be sure you use the link above as well to reserve a time for your appointment.
