All students at MIS were given the opportunity to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice. They were issued voter’s registration cards, and had to present this ID to Mrs. Kirby or Mrs. Smith who were manning the polling place. Then they silently walked up to a computer to make their selection. After voting, they were given an “I voted” sticker, just like the adults receive. Mrs. Sammons said, “The students I talked with had a real sense of pride about being able to cast a vote and speak out. This was a good experience for them.” They got to experience the electoral process first hand, and even experience the electoral college system since each homeroom had a specified number of electoral votes and it was possible for a candidate to win the majority of votes, but not win the majority of electoral votes.
