W. Clement Stone made this knockout observation a good half century ago, “There’s very little difference in people. But that little difference makes a big difference.  The little difference is attitude, and the big difference is whether it is positive or negative.”

There is a hot new field of research in the behavioral sciences.  It’s called positive psychology, and it’s proving that attitude profoundly affects performance.  This sophisticated new research highlights the power of thinking patterns, and the broad influence optimism has on our effectiveness, happiness, and health.  Repeating positive mantras or phrases is not enough.  Positive thinking is important, but non-negative thinking is the essence of hard optimism. It is a deliberate way of thinking.  It is about focusing on blessings, emphasizing opportunity, and explaining events to ourselves in a way that enhances performance and improves the quality of our lives. It comes when we change how we deal with our negative thoughts and feelings.

As the cooler autumn weather begins to make an appearance later this month, I encourage the entire MISD Family to be the Boss of Your Attitude!  Optimism or Pessimism—ultimately, it is your choice.  But our students deserve someone who has hard optimism about their future!!

District of Innovation

In the 84th Legislative Session, House Bill 1842 was passed allowing traditional public school districts more local control and many of the flexibilities afforded to Texas’ Open Enrollment Charter Schools.  To gain the local control and access the flexibilities, a school district must adopt an innovation plan as set forth in Texas Education Code Chapter 12A.  This process allows a school district to become a District of Innovation and pursue specific innovations and gain exemption from many Texas Education Code requirements.  Some exemptions include: uniform school start date, minimum minutes of instruction, class size ratio, 90% attendance rule, teacher certification, and contracts.

I am excited to announce the Montgomery ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution at their September Meeting allowing for MISD to begin the process of becoming a District of Innovation.  We will use this process to guide our strategic planning for the next 5 years. There will be a District of Innovation Committee and multiple opportunities for teacher, parent, and community input into any innovations MISD wishes to implement.   So, let’s put on our thinking caps and collectively create the school district of the future—right here in Montgomery, America!

New Attendance Boundary Development Process

To accommodate grade level realignment and the opening of Keenan Elementary and Oak Hills Junior High in August of 2017, as well as Lake Creek High School in August of 2018, it will be necessary for MISD to redraw attendance boundaries for all schools.   In October, MISD will post 3 attendance boundary options on our website and solicit public input.  The District will host a series of town hall style meetings at different schools in the evenings to allow for additional input.  After reviewing all input, the administration plans to make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on the new attendance boundaries in December.

  • All Montgomery Campuses “MET STANDARD”, which is the highest rating possible, on the latest round of Texas standardized tests
  • Montgomery ISD has the 19th highest passing percentage (86.5%) on STAAR in grades 3-8 in the state of Texas out of 179 districts larger than 5,000 students
  • Montgomery ISD has the 4th highest passing percentage (86.5%) on STAAR in grades 3-8 in the Houston Area
  • Montgomery Intermediate earned 3 Distinction Designations this year:Top 25% Student Progress, Top 25% Closing Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness
  • Stewart Creek Elementary earned 2 Distinction Designations this year:Top 25% Student Progress andTop 25% Closing Performance Gaps
  • Madeley Ranch Elementary earned 1 Distinction Designation this year: Top 25% Closing Performance Gaps
