First graders at The Ranch have been learning about rights and responsibilities of citizens. They learned that voting is a responsibility of being a good citizen and explored the process of voting through the book Duck for President by Doreen Cronin. First graders made campaign signs, wrote about their candidate, and debated over who would make the better President- Duck or Farmer Brown. On Tuesday, a mock Presidential election was held. There was a voting booth in the classroom with election officials monitoring. Each student previously filled out a voter's registration card, which they brought to the booth for verification. The votes were tallied in each classroom and graphed. The election official then took their classroom's results and voted in the hall as an "Electoral College" vote. After all six classes were represented, the President elect was announced. Duck won by a landslide 6-0! Farmer Brown demanded a recount! Unfortunately, it was not close enough to do so!
Student Mason McGee shared that his favorite thing about this experience was “actually getting to vote because I’ve never been able to. It was fun!”
