DECA

DECA, a national association of marketing education students, provides teachers and members with educational and leadership development activities to merge with the education classroom instructional program. DECA is not extracurricular; it is an integral part of the classroom instructional program. DECA chapters attract students who are interested in preparing for entrepreneurial, marketing or management careers. While DECA membership consists primarily of students in marketing programs, membership extends also to alumni and to professionals in marketing education and in marketing teacher education. Working hand-in-hand with the education and business communities, DECA’s goal is for its student members to develop a "career success kit" to carry into their business and personal lives after graduation; one that includes:

To accomplish this, DECA utilizes on-the-job experience, chapter projects, and a program of competency-based competitive events in specific marketing occupational areas. These events emphasize academic and vocational excellence as building blocks for successful marketing and management careers and demonstrate the direct relationship between marketing education and the real needs of business and industry. Each year more than 110,000 students participate in the competitions on the local, state and national levels.

A non-profit organization, DECA is governed by an elected Board of Directors. The National Advisory Board made up of representatives of major U.S. corporations and businesses who support DECA’s mission, and the Congressional Advisory Board made up of members of the U.S. Congress, offer members support and guidance. Since July 1991, the organization is known by its commonly recognized acronym, DECA, accompanied by the tag line, "An Association of Marketing Students". The familiar diamond DECA logo has been updated; newly designed to suggest the strength, stability, and forward-looking attitude of the association and its 180,000 student members.

What We Stand For

In 1946, the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) organized around an ambitions goal: to improve educational and career opportunities in marketing, management and entrepreneurship for students. In the years since, DECA has remained on the cutting edge of educational innovation, working with the business community to integrate academic achievement with vocational and career skills.

Over time, the needs of our membership have changed, and we have changed to meet them. Yet the fundamental reasons we formed remain at our core: First, effective marketing education gives young people the tools and aptitudes they need to pursue their dreams. Second, marketing education works best when it's part of an integrated education program linking classroom instruction with internship experience for career success.

With 180,000 student members and faculty advisors, we function as the companion student organization to over 5,000 marketing education programs in secondary and postsecondary schools across the U.S., its territories and Canada. Our once-revolutionary ideas have become models for effective educational alternatives. DECA remains committed to the advocacy of marketing education and the growth of business and education partnerships.

DECA's Mission

The mission of DECA is to enhance the co-curricular education of students with interests in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. DECA helps students develop skills and competence for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community service. DECA is committed to the advocacy of marketing education and the growth of business and education partnerships.

Leo Club

"Leadership, Experience, Opportunity"

Our local Leo club is an official activity of the Lions Clubs International which encourages young men and women to help others around their community and around the world. Leo clubs are sponsored by local Lions clubs and may be either community-based or school-affiliated.

Leo club activities include service projects, regular meetings, and social functions. The Leo club motto is fulfilled as members work together in response to the needs of others.  The motto is: Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.

The success of a Leo club depends on a close partnership with their sponsoring Lions club. Leos are responsible for financing their projects, planning and implementing their own activities, and maintaining the smooth operation of the club, while the Lions role is to offer support, guidance and counsel. The Leos have their own club officers and constitution.

The Leo club advisor serves as the chief liaison between the Leo and Lions club. Duties of the advisor include reporting on their activities to the Lions club, offering constructive suggestions to the Leos, and promoting a cooperative relationship between the two clubs.

As a sponsored activity of the Lions club, Leo clubs are entitled to many benefits and services offered by Lions Clubs International. Club materials and information include new member kits, guides for service activities, ideas for fund raising, international newsletters, leadership aids and club supplies.

Because of the international scope of Leo clubs, members enjoy the global identity of a worldwide organization. International programs such as club twinning, youth camps and youth exchange enable Leos to connect with and learn from other young people around the world. Leos can participate in the annual Lions Clubs International Convention, attending their own functions. Leos are also entitled to receive official awards and recognition for their achievements.

Young people, the sponsoring Lions club, and the community all benefit from the Leo club. Youth participate in activities and projects that help out young people to prepare for the future by developing leadership, organizational and social skills.  Members experience increased self-esteem and personal growth as they meet challenges and accept responsibilities. Leos learn firsthand the value and rewards of service by volunteering their time and talents for the benefit of others.  The Leos club involvement can start young men and women on a lifetime of helping others.

Youth of the community are a valuable resource, but one that can not be taken for granted. Many of today's young women and men have the capabilities and the desire to make a difference in the world around them. Sometimes, too often, these kids do not have the opportunity to do so. The Leos club provides this opportunity.

The Lions club is encouraged to invest in the future of their communities and their young people through sponsorship of Leo clubs.

A Leo club can increase a Lions club's effectiveness in helping others by sharing in service activities. Working with young people can help Lions club members experience renewed interest and enthusiasm for projects and activities. Leo projects within the community also contribute to a Lions club's visibility and good reputation. If Leos are sons and daughters of Lions, club involvement becomes a "family affair".

Leo projects contribute to the well-being of the community.  Involvement in the Leo International Literacy & Culture Project helps to create a more literate, culturally-oriented world. Some of the ways Leos improve the quality of life for others are  improving the environment, promoting drug awareness, offering health services, visiting the elderly and providing food, clothing and supplies to the needy.

Leo clubs can be formed in public, private, military, technical or parochial school. The Leo club is subject to the regulations and policies established for all student organizations and activities. The supervision by the sponsoring Lions club is exercised in full cooperation with the school authorities. A faculty advisor, usually a member of the school's staff or administration, serves as a liaison between the school and Leo club.  The faculty advisor also  works with the Leo club advisor.
